Cri-Cri Gorycki, Community Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator
Why and how did you become involved with HSKC?
My mother was a huge influence on me as I was growing up and, like her, I have loved animals of all kinds since I was a young child. I rescued every injured, stray and unwanted animal that crossed my path – mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects and birds. Once I had children of my own, we had a menagerie of animals whom we adopted (usually “foster failures”) from local shelters or that we took in off the streets. When our family moved to Chestertown in 2010 it was only natural that I would look to volunteer at the local animal shelter. I found that I was happiest whenever I had time to socialize the cats and walk the dogs. The people who worked there were so friendly and cared so deeply for the animals that I always left the building feeling happier and more hopeful than when I had entered. It got to the point that my husband could tell when I hadn’t been to the Shelter in awhile because I would become sad or grumpy. He’d tell me, “You better head over to HSKC today and spend some time with those animals!” Once a position opened up at the Shelter to work as a Kennel Tech, I jumped at the opportunity to work here. One thing led to another and I am now the Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator. I love my job because I get to work with some of the most caring people whom I have ever met, both staff and volunteers!
Do you have pets?
I have ALWAYS had pets…even when I was away at school and I wasn’t “technically” allowed to have a pet, I had to have at least a goldfish. At the moment my family and I have two amazing Labrador Retriever dogs named Inky and Boomer (whom we rescued from HSKC) and four awesome rescued cats named Tigger, Charlie, Chewy and Ollie (two of whom are HSKC alums). We have also rescued a Husky from HSKC and fostered multiple litters of nursing Mama cats and their kittens and a Mama dog who birthed her nine puppies in our den!
What’s your favorite thing about HSKC?
Aside from getting to work with animals every day, my favorite thing about HSKC is the staff! I cannot imagine a better place to work than HSKC because the people who work there with me are so dedicated, caring, compassionate, loving and kind. When I get home from work my husband will always ask me to rate my day and I can honestly say that each day (even if it has been a difficult one) is a 10 Plus! We joke that after working in the financial industry in NYC and at various schools and other organizations, I have finally found my “happy place.” HSKC has the unique combination of what it takes to make me a happy person – the ability to affect a change for the betterment of animals in an environment where we are all working together for the common cause.
What do you do when you are not at the shelter?
I love to be outside! When I am at home I am usually walking my dogs, gardening or hanging out in our pool. I have two wonderful children who are both in college at the moment so spending time with them is very special to me. We don’t do it often enough but my favorite things to do with them are to go camping, kayaking, and bike riding. I also enjoy listening to books on tape and eating everything and anything that my gourmet chef husband wants to prepare for me! I also enjoy traveling and visiting with friends far and near.
