Adopt a Pet

On behalf of our homeless animals, we thank you for considering the adoption of a rescue pet! Please see our available pets below.

If you would like to begin the adoption process, complete and submit an adoption application and please allow five business days for processing. We require at least one person from your household to visit the animal you are interested in before the day of adoption, so plan to make at least two trips to our shelter.

We strongly encourage all family members and roommates to participate in getting to know the pet of interest before a decision is made, ensuring a good fit for all. If you have other pets, please ask us if a meet-and-greet would be appropriate. See our shelter visitation hours and information. If you have questions at any time, please contact us.

We provide medical testing and shots, such as the rabies vaccine, to all animals prior to adoption. Learn more about what is included in our adoption fees.

Melanie has such a tender, sweet disposition with people which makes her beautiful from the inside out. When she came in she was a little rough around the edges, a couple of scars on her face but more on her heart. The staff was told that she was pregnant and from the looks of her body, this wasn't the first time. So the staff kept a close eye on her, catered to her nutritional needs, and began to try to find a foster home for this mama. As Melanie began to get regular diet and exercise she also appeared to be "not so pregnant". A few days later the vet confirmed there were no babies. Now Melanie has been spayed and has been the most lovey-dovey girl ever. It's like she is grateful for the friends she has made at the shelter and all they have done for her. But Melanie's happy ending is not quite written. She prefers to be the only dog and was more scared of cats than you can imagine. She is timid and laid-back and prefers belly rubs to long walks any day. Do you have room in your family for Melanie? Please help write her happily ever after!

Meet 4yr old, dazzling Nyla! This beautiful blue Staffordshire terrier mix will put you under a spell with her enchanting eyes and affectionate personality. One thing that is obvious about Nyla, is that she wants to be the only dog. But all you need is one dog when you have a pooch like this!! Take her in the yard with a squeaky ball and she will run and jump and frolic, and SQUEAK; practically entertaining herself for a long time. That describes her silly side, but she has a cuddle bug side that she just can’t hide. You better make room on the sofa for this 68lb. princess, because she is going to want to be right beside you watching the news or napping at your feet while you read a book. Her most recent accomplishments include participating in a research project about animal behavior and training methods for psychology students at Washington College; and volunteering at the Kent County Adult Daycare Center as a visiting therapy dog. If you are looking for that one special pet to add love and laughter to your family, then please consider visiting and adopting Nyla from The Humane Society of Kent County today!

Check out this young, muscular, athletic hunk! Ty is a pint sized pitty mix with a pleasant personality. This young 1 1/2 year old isn't all beauty, he has brains to match. He recently participated in a study testing animal behavior and training methods performed by psychology students at Washington College. So yeah, he practically has a college education. Ty seems friendly with most other dogs, but would probably prefer not to live with a cat. He has a lot of energy so he would like to live with an active owner. Ty actually had an owner that loved him, but sadly she had to surrender him due to medical reasons. He has tried to stay brave and strong through his stay at the shelter, but all he really wants is to find a family that will love him forever.

Orange is a super sweet, pretty petite, black and white cat. This young feline should be named the comeback kid! When you hear her story, you will understand why! Orange appeared in the emergency drop off room at The Humane Society of Kent County one Monday morning a few months ago. There she sat smack dab in the middle of a bunch of feral kitties that had been dropped off as well. It was assumed that she was surely one of them. Since there were quite a few, it was decided that each cat would be given a color for a name. There was Red, Green, Blue, Sienna, Cyan, Magenta, and of course……Orange!! She is jokingly nicknamed “Orange is the New Black”! It didn’t take long to figure out that Orange was not one of the feral cats, but rather just a really SCARED pet. It is extremely hard when there is no information given at the time of drop off. And it is always that animal that suffers. Orange went through weeks curled up in a ball in her kennel, essentially shut down. She wouldn’t eat and only tolerated being touched. She was losing weight and muscle tone from being so immobile. The staff members were stumped. Orange was sent to the vet to make sure that she wasn’t sick. That wasn’t the answer. Occasionally a volunteer would stop by to visit the cats in the adoption room and Orange would get up and start eating! So that volunteer continued to come, always with super smelly sardines for her new found friend. Little by little Orange got her strength and her appetite back. She was moved to an office to see if that would further cheer her up. Orange warmed up to the office staff immediately and now she has a bed in front of the window and she sings for her breakfast every morning. She loves laps and lots of love. Orange may have a past that is a mystery, but her future is clear. Anyone would fall for this endearing little girl who looks like little Bambi when she walks. Come out and see her today!

St. Nick would prefer the company of other cats to humans. He has been neutered and all of his shots are up to date. His adoption fee is waived to someone with the perfect home for him which ideally would be a barn where he could spend his days keeping the mice away.
